We think buying handmade should be a more personal, slightly more honest experience than a run-of-the-mill purchase. After all, you are buying an object that someone has spent days creating, is one of its kind, put all their passion, talent and a little bit of themselves in there.
When you buy ‘handmade’, you buy ‘heart’.
Which is why we think that it’s time to get to know the person behind the passion. In this series, we hope to give you a glimpse of some of the amazing handcrafters, artists and makers on ideyna. Their crafts are varied, they come from different parts of the world, they speak different languages but they certainly have one thing in common – they love what they do.
Kate is originally from England, but has made Dubai her home for over 14 years along with her family. For this former teaching assistant, knitting and sewing was just a part of life while growing up.
Knitting and sewing were things that my sister and I grew up with, thanks to Mum, she taught us all we know. We didn’t consider it a ‘craft’, it was just something that we did, making sweaters, clothes for our dolls or a new school skirt. By the time school sewing lessons started (all girls had to have them!) we were already streets ahead…
Kate has always loved making things and now with her boys away at university, finds that she has the time to dedicate to creating beautiful cushions for her own home and for us.
Kate’s tapestry cushions are her favourite (and ours too). She tells us,
After deciding on a design, I hand draw it onto the canvas and then sew at my leisure. It is a job that cannot be rushed, I find it therapeutic, and at 100 stitches per square inch, it’s a labour of love.
When we asked her how she finds her inspiration, this talented lady smiled and revealed,
As much as I try, I don’t have a routine, I find that I am drawn to my work room throughout the day. Just handling the fabric or running my fingers through a tin of buttons will give inspiration for another project, or a totally unrelated conversation will spark off an idea.
We love Kate’s gentle calm, her serenity shows in her work but there is also a precision about her that we quite admire. From an elegant Aran Cable Knit cushion to a playful ‘Scottie’ Tapestry one, you will find Kate Hemingway’s wonderful work in her shop on ideyna called Finishing Touches.
